Dress to Impress: Dating Attire Important
Post date: 2004-04-06
the clothes a date wears is very important when it comes to dating. In a December 2003 survey of more than 500 singles, 70% say their date's attire has an impact on how desirable they find him or her.
Match.com's survey of singles also found that 27% of single women said that bowties, if worn by men on a first date, would ruin all chances of them getting a second date (leather pants ran a close second with 26%). Further, 28% of women admitted that if they could offer first date fashion advice to the men they date, they would advise them not to bathe in their cologne and not to wear clothes that are unflattering to their body types. Men were equally as adamant about women who dressed too flamboyantly and over the top on a first date, as 36% admitted they'd either declined a second date or stopped dating a woman because of her first date fashion choice. If single men could give first date fashion tips to the women they date, 27% would say too much makeup is a no-no. Surprisingly, 40% of women said they were not turned off by men who wore makeup.
"Deciding how to dress, apply your makeup and/or style your hair for a job interview, a business meeting or your best friend's wedding requires time and attention to get it just right. And the same rules apply when deciding how you should look on a first date," said Trish McDermott, Vice President of Romance and resident dating expert at Match.com. "First date impressions can be lasting, so it is important to understand the messages you are sending with the fashion choices you've made."
First Date Fashion Tips from Diane von Furstenberg Studio Stylists
-- Be sure to wear something you feel comfortable in. Don't wear a color (makeup or clothing) for the first time that you've never experimented with before that night.
-- Show just enough skin. Don't dress too conservatively or too sexy.
-- Wear a light fragrance. Do not bathe in it -- a little goes a long way and choose something that is not too overbearing.
-- Play up your best features.
-- Wear makeup and clothing that will reflect your personality and mood.
-- Don't wear your hair in your face. Covering your face can make you appear insecure or shy, which may be far from true of your personality.
"The most important thing is that you feel light, easy and not stressed. Meeting somebody new is exciting even if no magic happens, so go with the flow and enjoy it all," said Diane von Furstenberg. "Enjoy who you are and let somebody else enjoy it too. Everyone is unique."
